Sun Protection for Children

When it comes to protection from the sun clothing and shade is always best, but as we can’t completely avoid exposure to harmful UV radiation, regular reapplication of sunscreen gives essential additional protection.

Top Tips for Children

  • Always dress children in a hat which shades the face and covers the back of the neck and ears.
  • Choose a high SPF and UVA protection that is fragrance-free, to reduce the risk of allergic reactions.
  • Application of sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure is best. Applying before leaving the house ensures better application and avoids the child running straight into the water.
  • Whenever possible, include your child in the process. Songs and games allow for better compliance and engagement during the application of sunscreen.

Examples of this may be using the sunscreen to draw pictures or play join the dots. Children can be encouraged to help “rub it out” (spread the sunscreen).
  • Don’t forget to check easy to miss areas such as the ears, tops of feet and hands.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours. Reapplication is particularly important after exercise, swimming or sweating.
